I was standing outside of the church waiting to be picked up by my dad, just sort of staring into the middle distance, pondering about life. This man walking out of church came up to me, shook my hand, and said, "How are you doing?". I shook his hand and replied, "Doing well." Then the guy said, "That was a great look of contemplation. I like that," and just...walked away.
A great look of contemplation? If he thought that was a great look before he said that, he should have seen my face after he walked away! But seriously, it's left me thinking about it for over an hour and half now. I guess the cool thing is, this stranger that I've only ever said two words to, and may never see again, or at least won't remember his face if I do, in two seconds understood a very key fact about me that hardly any one I actually know understands. He took one look at me and instantly knew that the blank-slate look on my face is just the look I get when I'm in a great state of contemplation. AND he said that he liked it. Most people are just like, "Um, Anne, you look like you're mad or sad or something, what's wrong?" and then I have to somehow make it clear that I'm neither of those things, I'm just thinking. Anyways....what a funny and random thing to say to someone! And what a funny and random thing to think about for two hours after you hear it. Well....let me tell you....all of that contemplation has a purpose! I've got my mind wrapped around two blog posts I'm going to write about later. And let me tell you, I'm going to be bringing the heat on these next two!
