- Small talk with strangers. Example: I was at the post-office mailing a package this week. Usually when it comes to customer-service type transactions I just kind of do my business and move on. Even if the person helping me asks something like, "How's it going?" I usually just give a short reply and leave the conversation there. But this time the post-office lady struck up a conversation about my package because she saw it was addressed to a missionary, and I actually decided to *gasp* be friendly and talk to her. Which spurred a conversation about my brother serving in Ohio. So anyways, by small and simple means great things come to pass.
- Comments in class. Example: This is so dumb and small it's hardly worth sharing, but you have to understand, I revel in the little victories. So, in class the teacher was reading a poem with a bunch of riddle-like sentences and kind of pausing for us to guess how they finished. No one was really taking the bait. So I just started saying the answers out loud whenever I knew them and this kind of inspired more participation. Normally I just kinda sit there and say nothing in class. So, this is a step in the right direction I guess.
- This isn't really talking, but I've been trying to smile more. I consciously made an effort today to make sure I always had a smile on my face (and a genuine, natural one at that) while walking around campus and to and from home today. It's harder than it looks. And, I figure smiling is a great way to go into any conversation, so I think it counts towards this project.
- I was invited to a couple things this week where I didn't really know anyone else going except for the person that invited me, but I went anyway, and enjoyed myself, and had fun.
Well that's basically it folks. So, I'mma (my new favorite word) try harder this next week to take bigger steps.
