Words from the wisdom toothless

Wednesday I had my wisdom teeth taken out.  After much MUCH convincing from my dad and Amy, I decided to get them out the tough way and stay awake for the procedure. That's right, no anesthesia. Nothing but novacaine. As I sat in the dentist's chair waiting to get the dreaded operation over with, the doctor gave me the procedural prep talk and commended me for my decision to stay awake during the surgery like the courageous 21 year old I was.  However, it apparrently didn't take much to change the doctor's mind about my brave adult status. The pre-extraction numbing began.  The first 500 shots stung like crazy.  I held in the pain through closed eyes with great valor until the doctor went in with the last shot of novacaine.  The blazing sting of the needle filling the roof of my mouth was enough to put me over the edge and before I knew it tears flowed shamelessly out of my eyes and my body started to shake ever so slightly. The sweet elderly dental assistant squeezed my hand and rubbed my forearm saying, "It's alright. You're almost done." The doctor finished terrorizing my mouth with his novacaine needle and as my face began to fall off in numbness, he said with great enthusiasm, "Alright! You're doing great! And guess what! If you're a good girl throughout the procedure, I'll give you a really cool light-up prize at the end!"

What am I?  Five? But it seemed to work, because you bet your life I was a good girl as my wisdom teeth were dissected from my gums. Didn't even flinch. And the doctor held good to his word. As I was leaving he handed me a purple, spiky, light-up ring.  Boy did I feel great as I left his office. Thank goodness he gave me that ring....But in all seriousness, getting my wisdom teeth removed was not as daunting or painful as I had hyped it up to be in my mind.  The recovery, on the other hand....let's just say I naively imagined that with a little bit of TLC and O.J. I'd be one hundred percent ready to run a 5k the next morning.  But it hasn't been quite like what I imagined. To sum up my experiences these last few days, I've written a little song.

(To the tune of My Favorite Things from the Sound of Music)

Ice packs and gauzes and lots of salt rinses
Gums that are bleeding, grimaces, winces
Uncomfortable stitches, I'm tied up with strings
All this because of those wisdom tooth things!

Cream colored oatmeal and mashed up bananas
Smoothies and ice cream and cold raman noodles
Cottage cheese, sherbet, and chocolate pudding
These are the few things that I get to eat!

Swelling and bruises, stuck wearing my glasses
Only recognizable by my nose and eye lashes
Sleeping for hours on our living room couch
These are a few things that make me say ouch!

When I can't bite, or sleep at night
When I'm feeling sad,

I simply remember
my favorite things

and then I don't feeel so bad

  1. Drugs?? Haha the only thing they wanted me to have when I got mine out was ibuprofen. The worst part is having to rinse out the holes until they heal!!

  2. I can't believe you stayed awake!!! that is some intense surgery! but maybe that's smart, because when I got mine out I was knocked cold, and when they woke me up I cried and was inconsolable for like 2 hours haha.

I love that your favorite things are drugs. AMEN SISTAH! your love, your love, your love... is my drug.
