20 reasons why I'm awesome

Just kidding! Although that would be a great blog, I haven't quite attained that level of narcissism yet.  This is a very special blog post, however.  Congratulations, because you, at this very moment, have the exuberant honor of reading my 20th blog post!

Reaching my 20th blog post is not really a great feat.  Nay.  The reason for my excitement is really due to the fact that this just so happens to be the year of 20.

Being the last of three daughters, I always esteemed the actions of my older sisters highly.  I remember one day in my twenty years of life with vivid detail.  It was May 14th.  I had just turned 13 and it was my little-by- size, big-by-age, sister Eila's  birthday.  She was visiting our home in Hawaii during her summer break from college.  I had just asked her why she got to do whatever she wanted.  Eila's response:

   " I'm Tweeeeeeeenty! I'm twentyyyyy!!!"

Yes.  Before my newly-teenage eyes my older sister, rolling around on the floor, kicking her feet in the air and proudly declaring her age, displayed to me the heightened level of maturity one reaches at the age of twenty.

For seven long years I awaited that glorious day when I would be able to do the same.  And now I can.  Because that's right...... I'm tweeeeeeeeeenty!!! Ahem.  We're good.

So, if it is not already evident, twenty holds a special place in my heart.  That is why, out of the kindness of that twenty-year-old heart, I have compiled a list of the top twenty reasons why my life is awesome.  (See, by   referring to it like that I still get to be self-praising under the guise of humility)

20.  My life has spanned two decades.

19.  The first half of my life, thus far, took place in one century, and the second in another.

18.  I know the theme song from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air by heart.

17.  When I think of science I still think of Bill Nye.

16.  I remember keeping a cassette tape on hand in case my favorite song came on the radio, and now technology exists where I can literally stream any song I want directly to my phone whenever I want.

15.  There was a time when logging onto the internet meant a ten minute wait, lots of cool electronic/static sounds, and a deep-voiced "Welcome! You've got mail!", and now it's a crime to humanity if it takes longer than 10 seconds for a page to load.

14.  The idea of x-ray vision used to be limited to just superheroes and now perfect strangers working as airport security have access to a complete invasion of my privacy any time I choose to fly! Far out!

13.  I still say things like "Psych!", "Dude", "The Bomb", "Homeskillet", "Aiight", "as if" and "talk to the hand" on a regular basis.

12.  I'd been to 9 different countries by the time I turned 18.

11.  I remember auditioning for the Oscar Mayer commercials back when they still did that and having arguments with friend over whether it was m-e-y-e-r or m-a-y-e-r.

10.  I can't spell the word aardvark without singing the song I learned from Arthur in my head.

9.  I remember when playing outside was a normal thing for kids to do and didn't get my first cell-phone till I left for college.  Now seven year olds are texting and it's a miracle if there are ever any kids older than three at the park.

8.  I used to sit in the sun for hours selling lemonade on the sidewalk and would cherish the 34¢ I made. I literally saw a kid throw his change in the trash the other day.

7.  I still think polaroid cameras are the coolest.

6.  Growing up my life goal was to be a farmer.  Now it's to be a teacher.  They're both pretty similar. Both involve taming the wild and earning next to nothing.

5.  I remember a time when going to the dollar theater used to actually cost a dollar and when a 10 dollar bill used to cover a ticket, popcorn, and a drink at the regular theater.

4.  The question, "Where's home?" is honestly one of the toughest questions for me to answer, and I love it.

3.  I still wish I had light up sneakers.

2.  Thinking about Ferbies and Alf still gives me the creeps.

I know all of those things I just wrote seemed like an ode to the 90's and a "dis" to today, but they were, in fact, reasons why my life is awesome.  But, the number one reason why my life is awesome is.....

#1.  I'm twenty years old, have a scholarship at the school of my dreams (which just so happens to be in Hawaii...),  and I have the most amazing friends and family a girl could ask for!

Peace out homies!
